Have you ever said, “Welp*, that isn’t going to create the reaction I want, is it?” [*Insert your favorite expressive word here.]
We’re doing the best we can with what we have in the moment, and it makes sense to react that way b/c we’ve always done it…it’s an automatic habit, a knee-jerk reaction. But, we’re not robots, are we? We can put that behavior on pause, and choose a different way of interacting with those around us.
+++Identify what you’re doing that is creating a negative result.
+++Get clear on what result you’d want to create instead.
+++Determine a reasonable and appropriate strategy to create that desired result.
The key here is to pick something that you’re legitimately excited or curious about, and something you can sincerely put into action. If you find yourself picking something you think you should do… keep in mind that those shoulds are often connected to those old habits, and that’s what you want to break free from.
The goal is not to add another thing to your already busy list. Ask yourself, what would be the most natural way for me to approach this goal of mine? Let the answer come from your heart, not your mind. Tap into that inner kid.
MAKE IT REAL:
So, what are you doing in your relationships that is just insane? How do you act at work that only separates you from your team? How do you act at home that only alienates your loved ones?
To put it simply, what are you doing that is simply not working? Ready to let that go and see some new possibilities?
